TRACK AND FIELD: Foothill League has big day at prelims.


It will be a family affair at the Southern Section Div. II finals next Saturday at Cerritos College.


Canyon's siblings of Tiffini and Kenny Stone along with Newbury Park's Megan and Morgan Thompson each qualified for multiple events at the prelims Saturday at Moorpark High.


Tiffini Stone made the field in the long jump (17 feet, 10 3/4 inches), triple jump (36-7 1/4) and will be part of the Cowboys 4 x 100 relay team (49.20), along with Malaye Cabrera, Erica Anunwah and Taylor Thomas.


"I am really excited to be able to go to the next level again," Stone said. "Last year I was a little shaky going up against the girls who were there. This year I am a lot more confident going into compete. having my brother there makes it a lot easier."


Along with the 4 x 100 relay team, Thomas earned a berth in the 100- and 300-hurdles, finishing in 14.50 and 45.43 respectively.


Thousand Oaks' Karen Sper finished in 15.30 to earn a spot in the 100 hurdle final.


Megan and Morgan Thompson each qualified for three events for Newbury Park.


The twin sisters bth qualified in the 400, winning their respective heats (57.51 seconds for Morgan and 57.28 for Megan).


Morgan Thompson also earned a berth in the 200 (24.91) and Megan earned a spot in the 800 (2:18.33).


"It's always good when I have my sister there," said Megan Thompson, who along with Morgan, Michela Tomlinson and Emily Sweetman qualified for the 4 x 400 relay (3:58.31). "It helps to push each other when you have a running partner."


Saugus' Jenna Vincej qualified in three events, earning a spot in the 200 (25.17), 400 (56.32) and the 4 x 400 (3:55.94).


The Centurions will also be well represented in the 3,200 as Kaylin Mahoney (10:47.50), Stephanie Bulder (10:52.79), Karis Frankian (10:54.03) and Jessica McCall (10:56.55) finished in the top nine qualifiers.


Saugus' Danielle Zirbel and Camarillo's Geraldlynn Leaupepe made the cut in the shot put with tosses of 36-9 and 39-2 respectively.


Westlake's Brooke Edell was a double-qualifier in the 100 (12.33) and 200 (25.41). Thousand Oaks' Caitlin Turner earned a spot in the 800, winning her heat with a time of 2:17.34.


Kenny Stone qualified in the four different boys' events for the Cowboys.


The senior made the finals in the 200 (24.91) and 400 (49.11) as well as the 4 x 100 (42.0) and the 4 x 400 relays (3:23.35).


"I didn't run as well as I wanted to today but I am pretty satisfied," said Stone, who ran the anchor on both relays. "Next week, I will definitely push myself a lot harder. Everybody in will be a lot faster so I will be ready."

 

Stone's Foothill League counterpart Saugus' James Weiner made the cut in three events.


Weiner qualified in the 100 (10.83), the 200 (21.67) and 4 x 100 (42.50), along with Ozzie McCowan, Tim Lindwall and Jeremy Gatewood.


"Coming in I wasn't expecting much in the 100 but it was exciting to qualify," Weiner said. "To PR by 3/10 of a second in the 200 is nice too."


Camarillo's Heyden Wooff earned a bid in the finals of the 1,600 (4:14.64) - along with Canyon's Sam Willis (4:19.87). Wooff finished third in his heat (9:23.32) .to make the cut in the 3,200.


Newbury Park's Sean Grumney will be the area's lone representative in the 800 as he finished in 1:56.03 to secure the ninth qualifiing spot.


Hart's Trevor Lien clocked 38.73 to earn a spot in the 300 hurdles.


In the field events, Thousand Oaks' Phillip Hanley (6-5) along with Hart's Tim White (6-3) and Canyon's Kevin Enge (6-3) earned a spot in the high jump.


Moorpark's Quinn Harris triple jump attempt 43-9 3/4 earned him a spot in the final.
